author bio (149 words)Mubashar Hasan, PhD, is an Australian-Bangladeshi writer, academic and internationally recognised authority on Bangladesh affairs. A survivor of enforced disappearance and torture under the Sheikh Hasina regime in 2017, he refused to be silenced—continuing to research, write and speak out from exile at considerable personal risk. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, University of Queensland, and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative, Western Sydney University. His books include Islam and Politics in Bangladesh: The Followers of Ummah (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) and the co-edited volumes Masks of Authoritarianism (2022) and The Long Reach of the Strong Arm (2025). A champion of refugee and human rights, he also works at the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), supporting communities rebuilding their lives after persecution.
